BHPThe Department of Conervation has introduced a requirement that the Backcountry Hut Pass (BHP) can now only be purchased online. 

To purchase a BHP, customers must have an account on the DOC huts and campsites booking system.

With a DOC account, FMC members can register their membership on their account, and once approved, they will be able to purchase a BHP with a 30% discount.

The terms and conditions for the BHP can be found here It is worth users checking the hut exclusions list so that you know in advance where you can and can't used your BHP.

Note that you can now future date the start date for your BHP.

The steps in the process are:

1. Create an account at https://bookings.doc.govt.nz/Web/

2. Register your FMC card.

  1. Take a photo of the FMC card. The name and card number must be readable.
  2. Login to your account.
  3. Under the menu: Your account>Your Profile, scroll down the Your Account Detail page to the "" heading and expand the drop down.
  4. Select FMC in Step 1. Then click "Choose File" in Step 2 and select the photo file to upload. Click "Save Changes" at the bottom.
  5. You will receive an email within 2-5 days confirming that your membership has been registered on your account.

3. Purchase an Annual Backcountry Hut Pass.

  1. Go to the booking system web page https://bookings.doc.govt.nz/Web/
  2. Login
  3. Click on the menu heading: Passes
  4. Select Adult 12 Month Backcountry Hut Pass - $144.00
  5. Select the date you wish the pass to start(up to 180 days in the future)
  6. Click the Add button to add the pass to the cart. The discount will be applied there to $100.80.
  7. Click on the check box for the terms and conditions and click on the Shopping Cart button.
  8. Check the details and click on the To Checkout button and complete the payment process.
  9. The account holder will receive a confirmation email with a pdf file of the Backcountry Hut Pass.

Using the Backcountry Hut Pass

  1. For bookable huts where the Backcountry Hut Pass can be used, the booking system will show a select box for the number of Backcountry Hut Pass adults.
  2. For non-bookable huts, the pass number should be entered in the hut log book as before.
  3. A copy of the pass, either on paper or held on a phone, must be carried on trips to prove eligibility where required.

To Receive a Plastic BHP Card

When you receive the confirmation that you have purchased a pass you will also receive an email explaining how to use the pass and how to request a plastic version if you require one, essentially its sending an email to the This email address is being protected from spambots.
